Reasoning with Ambiguity

چکیده

Abstract We treat the problem of reasoning with ambiguous propositions. Even though ambiguity is obviously problematic for reasoning, it no less obvious that propositions entail other (both and unambiguous), are entailed by This article gives a formal analysis underlying mechanisms, both from an algebraic logical point view. The main result can be summarized as follows: sound (and complete) requires distinction between equivalence on one congruence side: fact $$\alpha $$ α entails $$\beta β does not imply substituted in all contexts preserving truth. Without this distinction, we will always run into paradoxical results. present (cut-free) sequent calculus $$\mathsf {AL}^{\textit{cf}}$$ AL cf , which conjecture implements complete propositional ambiguity, provide language-theoretic semantics, where letters represent unambiguous meanings concatenation represents ambiguity.

Modelling Causal Reasoning under Ambiguity

Causal reasoning under ambiguity requires subjects to estimate and evaluate ambiguous observations. This paper proposes a hierarchical model that accounts for the uncertainty of both the distribution of the functional form selection and distribution of the ambiguity treatment selection. The posterior distribution of the causal estimates is determined by both the functional form and the ambiguit...

A logic for reasoning about ambiguity

Standard models of multi-agent modal logic do not capture the fact that information is often ambiguous, and may be interpreted in different ways by different agents. We propose a framework that can model this, and consider different semantics that capture different assumptions about the agents’ beliefs regarding whether or not there is ambiguity. We examine the expressive power of logics of amb...

Working Memory and Causal Reasoning under Ambiguity

Causal reasoning involves evaluation and integration of the observed evidence, the quality of which is influenced by the external factors such as uncertainty and the internal factors such as one’s cognitive ability. The current experimental study investigated the relationship between working memory (WM), causal reasoning and impacts of ambiguous observations. Results revealed that WM assessed b...

Resolution of Collective-Distributive Ambiguity Using Model-Based Reasoning

I present a semantic analysis of collective-distributive ambiguity, and resolution of such ambiguity by model-based reasoning. This approach goes beyond Scha and Stallard [17], whose reasoning capability was limited to checking semantic types. My semantic analysis is based on Link [14, 13] and Roberts [15], where distributivity comes uniformly from a quantificational operator, either explicit (...

Ambiguity , the certainty illusion , and the natural frequency approach to reasoning with inverse probabilities

People have difficulty reasoning with diagnostic information in uncertain situations, especially when an understanding and calculation of inverse conditional probabilities (Bayes theorem) is required. While natural frequency representations of inference tasks improve matters, they suffer from three problems: (1) calculation errors persist with a majority of subjects; (2) the representation suff...
